Spring of 2014 has been quite eventful so far. I wanted this to be a SXSW post, but enough has happened since Seattle and before SXSW that it needed to be broken up. To end January, Uchenna and I were invited to celebrate our mutual friend Karynne’s birthday with a dinner at Din Ho Chinese BBQ in north Austin. Everyone ordered family-style, so I got to try a bit of everything. All of the good things I have heard about this place were true. I will definitely go back someday. The BBQ Pork and Roast Duck were amazing.
At the end of the weekend, Anita invited us over to celebrate Chinese New Year with several friends. I finally got to meet Linda’s dog, Bob, who has his very own Instagram.
February of 2014 came. It’s a month filled with the Superbowl, birthdays celebrations for those I care about, Valentines Day, and a usual Houston trip. For Patrick’s birthday, and it was held at Brew and Brew in the east side of Austin. Baby Ruby also turned 1 that day. It was a good time as always.
The same night, we celebrated Uchenna’s birthday. This year was a little less crazy than last year after his return from 3 months in Korea for Samsung. Gloria, Natalie, Chisom, and several other friends had come in town for the event.
After a night downtown, we relaxed the next day and watched the blowout of a Superbowl. The NFC Championship game while Gloria and I were in Seattle was a much closer game. Eventually, Valentine’s Day weekend came, and Gloria and I decided to make it a Houston weekend. I’m happy she finally got to meet my friends Levi and Lhoren. We met up at Blacksmith Coffee Bar for early morning coffee, tea, and croissants.
We got to explore a few local parks while walking around neighborhoods, and Gloria noticed a sidewalk that seemed to stop, and took to moment to reenact the cover from a book many of us read while younger.
After returning to Austin, and before returning to Dallas, Gloria decided it was time to change her hairstyle, so TK came by to help. It was nice to see her again.
Several coworkers flew in from Chicago during the month of February. It was nice to meet Nell, Luke, Tina, Chantel, and Dylan, as I work with them a lot but have never actually gotten a chance to see them in person. While Nell and Luke were in town, we went to Lupe’s Tortilla across the street for a decent meal, and the following week to Pinthouse Pizza and Brewery while Tina, Chantel, and Dylan were around. I had never been to Pinthouse before, which is kind of sad since it is less than 3 minutes from my apartment. I have definitely been missing out there too. I joined them and Morgan, Chris, and Chris for a good dinner.
To finish the month off, Natalie and Rockell that I had not seen in a very long time were in town and needed a place to stay, as well as Gloria visiting. It was a full apartment, but a great weekend.
Gloria’s family was in town for a wedding reception for a close family friend, so I decided to join Gloria and stop by for a bit. With our own wedding to plan, I should probably see more of these.
To finish it off the month, I got to try a new place, The Hightower in the east side of Austin with Uchenna, Anita, and Linda. For my meal, I got the Scallops, with Italian sausage, kale, potato, dashi/cream broth, and for my drinks I went with the High Society, containing jameson, angostura bitters, and fever tree ginger brew. I don’t usually go to places like this, but it was a very enjoyable and new experience.
To finish off dinner, we tried a dessert food truck nearby, called Fried and True. As amazing as it was, I could definitely tell that it was something that should not be consumed much haha.
DO NOT DIET
This has been a great year so far. Work is going well, I have learned about the stock market, enjoying life and new places, and the next “S” trip with Gloria to Spain is all set. Next post: SXSW and concerts. Until next time everyone.
Song of the post: Star Slinger – II/IV.
This song just makes me feel really good. I hope to see Star Slinger at a live concert someday. Listen and enjoy.
